SCHOOLBOY DEFENSIVE ERRORS MAKE HODDLE DESPAIR

GLENN HODDLE'S England failed their first real test of this World Cup in Toulouse last night when they were out-passed, out-smarted and out-gunned by Romania.

An edgy England were unable to repeat the passing game that had seen them sweep Tunisia aside last week and with Alan Shearer isolated up-front alongside an out-of-sorts Teddy Sheringham, they never looked capable of winning the match. Defeat means England are now unlikely to top the group, and that could well mean a second round tie against the fantastic Argentinians.

18-year-old Michael Owen (pictured right) was ''bitterly'' disappointed to finish on the losing side after marking his second World Cup appearance with a brilliantly opportunistic goal that looked to have rescued a point in what was a below-par performance from Hoddle's men.

The England coach said: At this level, you can't defend like that on two separate occasions and expect to win games. We were very, very sloppy and naive in every sense. It was a horrible situation to let a goal in like that at the end. There was nothing wrong with the performance and, over 90 minutes, we created the better chances and should have won. It was a bitter pill to swallow and we really should have dealt with it. The morale of the lads is good and we know what we've got to do against Colombia.

Darren Anderton was our best player," he went on. "I'm pleased for him and it'll probably silence a few critics. There was a good performance from David Beckham and Owen did well, but when you go on as a sub you've got an emotional crutch. You've got nothing to lose. At this level you've got to have experience and I've always known that Michael would be good to use as a substitute. It's worked out very well.

"If we perform like we did here I think we can win against Colombia," Hoddle said. "We'll have to believe in ourselves you can't plan the third game until you know what the SP' is. I've got injuries to look at so ask me the questions when I know what the hell I'm talking about. You get tested in adversity and it's there that we'll find out what the players can really do.

The night's decisive moment came in injury time when the Chelsea pairing of Le Saux and Petrescu battled for the ball on the edge of England's six-yard box. As Le Saux turned away to avoid being hit by his club colleague's arm, the Romanian poked the ball under the advancing Seaman for a dramatic winner.

Petrescu's elbow came across my face as he moved in to score and when he shot the ball under David's legs, of course, it was a horrible moment, Le Saux told Football365. It was an absolutely bitter blow to pull things back and deservedly so then concede like that. What can you say? It doesn't matter who it was, it doesn't make a lot of difference to me, I'm just disappointed to have lost in that manner.
